Confessions of a KC Realtor: The Weirdest Things I’ve Seen During Showings

Let’s be honest for a second. When you think about real estate in Kansas City, you probably picture beautiful curb appeal in Brookside, sprawling lawns in Overland Park, or those sleek, modern lofts in the Crossroads. You imagine fresh-baked cookies, neutral paint colors, and perfectly staged living rooms that look like they jumped straight out of a magazine.

Well, as a Realtor who has spent years trekking through every corner of this beautiful metro area, let me tell you: The reality is often MUCH weirder.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. But for every perfectly polished home I show, there is at least one that makes me stop in my tracks, blink twice, and wonder, "Is this real life?" From questionable DIY projects to "art" that requires a therapy session afterward, I have seen it all.

Today, I’m pulling back the curtain. Here are my top "confessions" of the weirdest, wildest, and most "what on earth?" moments I’ve encountered while showing homes in Kansas City.

The Mannequin Menace

If there is one thing I have learned in this business, it’s that some people REALLY enjoy the company of silent, plastic humans.

I was showing a lovely, traditional two-story home in Prairie Village. Everything was going great. My clients were loving the hardwood floors and the updated kitchen. We headed upstairs to check out the primary suite. I pushed the door open, stepped aside to let my clients in, and was met with a collective gasp.

In the corner of the room, sitting in a rocking chair, was a full-sized mannequin dressed in a vintage wedding gown. No face. Just a smooth, plastic head staring blankly at the bed.

A confused dog looks at a mannequin in a wedding dress during a weird Kansas City home showing.

We didn’t stay in that room long. In fact, we didn’t stay in the house much longer at all. Note to sellers: If you have a collection of life-sized dolls or mannequins, maybe... just maybe... put them in storage before the "For Sale" sign goes up. It’s hard for a buyer to imagine their own furniture in a room when "Brenda the Plastic Bride" is already claiming the space.

The "Zoo" That Wasn't on the Listing

We all love our pets. In Kansas City, we are a dog-obsessed city, and I am ALL for it. I’ve met some of the sweetest pups during my career. However, sometimes the "pets" are a bit more... exotic than a Golden Retriever.

I once took a couple to see a ranch-style home near Independence. The listing mentioned a "sunroom with natural light." What it failed to mention was that the sunroom had been converted into a full-scale reptile sanctuary.

I’m talking floor-to-ceiling glass tanks. Enormous snakes, lizards that looked like they belonged in Jurassic Park, and one particularly grumpy-looking iguana that was free-roaming on top of a bookshelf. My clients were city people. They were not "iguana-on-the-bookshelf" people.

But the kicker? In a completely separate house in Gladstone, I walked into a kitchen to find a pot-bellied pig wearing a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, calmly eating Cheerios off the floor. Honestly? That pig had great taste in sports, but it definitely made the "spacious eat-in kitchen" feel a little crowded.

The Bathroom "Innovation"

We’ve all seen some interesting design choices, but bathrooms seem to be the place where DIY dreams go to die. I’ve seen carpeted bathrooms (why, 1970s, WHY?), but that’s nothing compared to the "Open Concept Bathroom."

I was showing a loft in the River Market area. It was gorgeous: high ceilings, exposed brick, the works. We got to the "primary suite" area, which was separated from the living room by a beautiful glass partition. Then we saw the toilet.

It wasn't in a separate room. It wasn't behind a curtain. It was just... there. A porcelain throne sitting right next to the bed, completely visible to anyone in the room (and probably anyone in the living room through the glass).

A cat sits on a bed next to a toilet in an oddly designed open concept Kansas City loft bedroom.

Exclusivity is great, but I think most people prefer a LITTLE more privacy when it comes to their morning routine. Needless to say, my clients decided that "Total Transparency" wasn't a feature they were looking for in a home.

The "I Forgot You Were Coming" Moment

This is the nightmare scenario for every Realtor. We schedule the showing through the proper channels, we get the confirmation, we knock loudly, we ring the doorbell, and we announce ourselves as we enter.

"REALTOR! HOUSE SITTING!"

Usually, the house is empty. But every once in a while, the seller forgets.

I once walked into a home in Lee’s Summit where the seller was sound asleep on the couch... in nothing but his boxers. He didn't even wake up when we walked in. My clients and I did a 180-degree turn so fast I think I got whiplash.

Then there was the time I opened a basement door only to find a teenager in the middle of a very intense, very loud heavy metal drum solo with noise-canceling headphones on. He had no idea we were there. We stood there for a solid thirty seconds just watching him shred before we quietly backed out.

The Basement "Science Labs"

Kansas City basements are a treasure trove of the unexpected. Most of the time, it's just a place for a dusty treadmill and some holiday decorations. But sometimes, people get creative.

I’ve walked into basements that were clearly being used for:

  • A professional-grade taxidermy studio (so many eyeballs staring at us).

  • A "shrine" dedicated entirely to a specific 90s boy band.

  • A DIY sensory deprivation tank made out of an old stock tank and a tarp.

  • A room that was entirely: and I mean ENTIRELY: covered in aluminum foil. Walls, ceiling, floor. ALL OF IT.

When you see a room covered in foil, you don't ask questions. You just check "Basement: Finished (Unique Style)" on your notes and move on to the next house.

A small pug sits in a Kansas City home basement entirely covered in reflective aluminum foil.

Let The Adventure Begin (With a Professional)

While these stories are hilarious to look back on, they highlight a very important point: Presentation matters.

When you are selling your home, you want buyers to fall in love with the house, not be distracted by your collection of vintage clown paintings or your pet pig’s wardrobe. That is where a professional team like Deena Daniels Real Estate comes in.

We help you navigate the "weird" so you can get to the "SOLD." We know exactly what KC buyers are looking for (and spoiler alert: it’s usually not a mannequin in a wedding dress).

How We Help You Avoid Being a "Confession":

  • Professional Staging Advice: We tell you exactly what needs to stay and what needs to go (looking at you, taxidermy collection).

  • Expert Photography: We make sure your home looks stunning online so people actually want to show up in person.

  • Clear Communication: We ensure that sellers are actually OUT of the house so no one has to see anyone in their boxers.

  • Market Knowledge: We know the Kansas City market inside and out, from Raymore to Parkville.

Thank you for taking the time to laugh along with me. Real estate is a wild journey, but it’s one I wouldn't trade for anything. Whether you’re looking for a home with zero mannequins or you're a seller who needs help hiding the "weird," I am here for you.
